Learn to Sail with Our Sailing Courses for Beginners

Taking your first steps into the world of sailing is both exciting and empowering. Whether you are completely new to the sport or returning after time away, sailing courses for beginners provide the perfect foundation. At Oxford Sail Training Trust (OSTT), our courses introduce the essential skills of sailing in a safe and supportive setting.

Located at Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford, our RYA-accredited training centre is ideal for individuals, families, and youth learners. The water is calm, the surroundings are scenic, and our instructors are committed to helping you succeed. For those starting their sailing journey, there’s no better place to learn.

Why OSTT is the Best Choice for Sailing Courses for Beginners

Learning to sail can feel like a big step. That’s why we make the process as approachable as possible. At OSTT, our instructors offer expert guidance and encouragement from the moment you arrive. More importantly, our courses are designed to build confidence and enjoyment at every stage.

Because our training centre sits on inland water, the learning conditions are more stable than those on open seas. In fact, this controlled environment makes it easier for beginners to focus on technique without being overwhelmed by challenging waves or unpredictable conditions.

Furthermore, we offer small group sizes, high instructor-to-student ratios, and practical lessons that make sure everyone gets individual attention. Many beginners arrive with nerves, but leave with a big smile and a new skill they can build on.

Our Range of Sailing Courses for Beginners

At OSTT, we follow the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) syllabus, which provides a national standard of progression. We welcome complete beginners of all ages and offer different routes to suit both adults and children.

Adult Sailing Courses

Our Adult Sailing Courses are designed for those aged 16 and above. If you have never sailed before, we recommend starting with:

  • RYA Start Sailing Level 1 – Learn how to launch a dinghy, steer, tack, and return to shore

  • RYA Basic Skills Level 2 – Develop independent control, including sailing in various directions and recovering from capsizes

Both levels focus on practical ability, water safety, and instructor feedback. Many adults go on to pursue more advanced skills or even qualify through our Instructor Training pathway.

Moreover, our instructors often tailor sessions to your pace and goals. You’ll receive guidance on equipment, safety, and progression opportunities during the course.

Junior Weekend Sailing Courses

For children aged 8 and up, our Junior Weekend Sailing programme offers a fun, structured way to get started. These weekend sessions follow the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme and begin with:

  • Stage 1 – Focuses on launching, steering, stopping, and basic boat handling

  • Stage 2 – Introduces more independent control and new skills like tacking and gybing

The weekend format means young sailors can build their skills gradually without needing to commit to a full week. Plus, the friendly environment encourages long-term participation and confidence-building.

Junior Holiday Sailing Courses

Our Junior Holiday Sailing Courses offer a more immersive experience during school holidays. These week-long sessions combine fun, games, and structured learning. They’re perfect for beginners who want to quickly gain confidence and achieve their first RYA certificate.

Young sailors who attend these courses often return year after year, progressing through Stages 3 and 4, then exploring other watersports like windsurfing or wingfoiling.

In every session, our instructors use games, hands-on activities, and clear demonstrations to help children feel comfortable and engaged.

Private Tuition for Beginners

If you prefer to learn at your own pace or on your own schedule, we also offer Private Tuition. These one-to-one or small group lessons are ideal for:

  • Adults who want individual coaching

  • Families who want to learn together

  • Those with specific goals or anxieties

Private sessions can be adapted to your needs and are available throughout the season. Because of this flexibility, many people choose private tuition before progressing to structured group courses.

Family-Friendly Watersports and Confidence Building

Sailing is more enjoyable when shared. At OSTT, we offer a range of activities that support families and first-timers. For example, our Family Paddling Sessions and Multi-Activity Holiday Courses are excellent for getting comfortable on the water before committing to a full sailing course.

Many families find that starting with paddleboarding or kayaking builds a foundation of water confidence. Once you’re ready, you can transition into our full sailing courses for beginners, knowing that you’ve already developed a sense of balance and familiarity with the equipment.

Progressing Beyond Beginner Sailing

Once you’ve completed a beginner course, there are many ways to continue your journey at OSTT. Adults can move on to:

  • RYA Level 2

  • Day Sailing and Seamanship Skills

  • Windsurfing, Wingfoiling, or Powerboating

  • Instructor Courses

Meanwhile, children can advance through the full Youth Sailing Scheme or join our Junior Holiday Courses year after year.

We also provide Supporting Courses in First Aid and VHF Radio, helping those who want to gain further responsibility or qualifications on the water.

Because sailing is a lifelong sport, these stepping stones allow you to grow from beginner to leader at your own pace.
