Rising through the ranks

For the first two weeks of the summer holiday, Europa School UK has partnered with the Trust to run weekly sailing sessions for over a decade. It was through this long-standing programme that Baz began his sailing journey at the age of eleven, developing new skills in an unfamiliar environment alongside his classmates. His enthusiasm for learning and natural aptitude enabled him to progress quickly.
Within just two weeks, Baz successfully completed all four RYA Youth Sailing Stages. Following this, he continued sailing with the club, participating regularly in club racing and earning an invitation to represent his home country, Guam, at the Asia-Pacific Championships, a plan unfortunately halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Having completed all advanced sailing modules, Baz began volunteering as an Assistant Instructor in 2021. His unique ability to incorporate his acrobatic skills proved to be both engaging and unexpectedly effective in managing groups. Building on this experience, he gained his official qualification as a Dinghy and Race Instructor through the Trust the following year.
This summer marks Baz’s third season working as an instructor. He now supports a new generation of young sailors, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm in the hope of giving back to the very scheme that first launched his own journey on the water.
