Nathan L – From School Sailing to Officer of the Watch

Nathan first started his RYA sailing through a Stage 1 programme at Oxford Sail Training, where his enthusiasm quickly stood out. He progressed rapidly through the RYA Youth Scheme and began developing both his technical skills and love for the sport. Outside of the centre, he expanded his experience competing at European and World Championships in two classes of boats, sailing yachts and keel boats, gaining valuable time on the water in a wide range of conditions.

Keen to give back and stay involved, Nathan trained as a dinghy instructor and became a key part of the Oxford Sail Training team. His time instructing helped him build leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills—abilities that would serve him well in the next stage of his journey.

Nathan went on to study at Warsash Maritime School, where he pursued a Deck Cadetship for Unlimited size Vessels, combining academic learning with practical seamanship. This pathway was a start to a career at sea, and he now works with Cunard Lines as an Officer of the Watch, navigating and managing some of the world’s most iconic cruise ships operating in all corners of the globe.

Nathan’s journey from a Stage 1 session to a professional maritime career is a testament to where early experiences at a local sailing centre can lead.
