Train Year-Round and Build Confidence on the Water

Powerboating doesn’t stop when the weather cools. Oxford Sailing Training Trust (OSTT) continues to run its Level 2 Powerboat course throughout the winter, giving you the chance to stay active on the water and qualify ahead of the spring season.

This two-day RYA-recognised course teaches the core skills needed to drive a powerboat safely and confidently. From understanding navigation and weather to handling manoeuvres at planing speed, each part of the course is designed to make you a capable and responsible driver. With smaller winter groups and calmer conditions, now is the perfect time to complete your training.

Why Winter Is the Perfect Time to Take Your Level 2 Powerboat Course

Winter training offers advantages that many people overlook. The quieter conditions allow instructors to give you more focused attention, which means extra time at the helm and more opportunity to practise. OSTT keeps the teaching ratio small, with no more than three students per instructor, so every participant receives personalised guidance.

Learning in cooler months also helps you adapt to different environments. The calm, crisp conditions common in winter are ideal for mastering the finer details of steering, launching, and mooring. You’ll gain confidence operating in weather that might feel unfamiliar but ultimately makes you a more adaptable powerboat driver.

Completing your qualification before spring gives you an early advantage. By the time warmer weather returns, you’ll already be ready to support sailing events, volunteer at your local club, or simply enjoy time on the water with assurance. OSTT provides all the necessary safety equipment, professional coaching, and indoor briefing areas to keep training comfortable year-round.

What You’ll Learn During the Course

The Level 2 Powerboat course balances practical sessions with essential theory. Over two days, you’ll cover everything from engine checks and pre-launch preparation to advanced manoeuvres and navigation principles.

Participants spend most of their time on the water. You’ll learn how to handle a boat confidently at both low and high speeds, reverse in confined spaces, and maintain position when wind or current changes. Each exercise builds on the last, ensuring that your confidence grows naturally throughout the course.

Navigation plays a key part in the syllabus. You’ll be introduced to chart symbols, buoyage, and pilotage planning, learning how to read the environment and make safe decisions. Instructors also explain weather systems, safety communication, and collision regulations to ensure you understand both the technical and practical sides of boating.

By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a full range of tasks: launching and recovering a powerboat, manoeuvring at planing speed, mooring alongside pontoons, and managing safety procedures in realistic conditions. Every participant receives an RYA Logbook to record their progress and qualification.

Who Can Join the Course

OSTT’s Level 2 Powerboat course is open to anyone aged 12 and over. No previous experience is needed, making it an excellent choice for beginners, club volunteers, and school staff who support water-based activities. Many participants also take the course as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, where RYA training qualifies under the Skills section.

Each session runs from 09:30 to 16:30 over two consecutive days, allowing enough time for both practical and theory-based learning. The 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio ensures that everyone gets time behind the wheel and tailored feedback throughout.

If you already have a season’s experience driving powerboats, OSTT offers a direct assessment route to the Level 2 certificate. You can call the office on 01865 865 551 to discuss eligibility.

Why the Level 2 Powerboat Course Is So Popular

The RYA Level 2 qualification is widely recognised across the UK and abroad. It provides a strong foundation for anyone who wants to operate small powerboats safely and independently. Many students use it as the first step towards the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which allows you to drive powerboats overseas.

What makes this course particularly appealing is the immediate sense of achievement. After just two days, you’ll notice clear progress, from your first launch to confidently bringing the boat alongside a pontoon. Instructors structure the sessions to build capability at a steady pace, helping every participant feel in control and safe.

The relaxed, professional environment at OSTT encourages learning at your own rhythm. Whether you are pursuing the course for personal development, volunteering, or as part of your professional training, you’ll leave with a qualification that opens doors to a range of boating opportunities.
