Trying something new can feel exciting and a little daunting, especially for young people. At Oxford Sailing Training Trust (OSTT), we understand how important that first experience on the water can be. Our junior sailing courses are designed to introduce children and teenagers to sailing in a safe, supportive and fun environment. Whether your child is feeling eager or a little nervous, we make sure every new sailor feels welcome from the moment they arrive.
A Safe and Friendly Start to Junior Sailing
Our team knows that safety is a top priority for parents and carers. All junior sailors are provided with the right equipment and are guided by qualified, experienced instructors. OSTT is an RYA-recognised training centre, which means our courses meet the highest national standards for safety and instruction.
Before any sailing begins, first-time participants are given a clear introduction to what to expect. This includes getting to know the boat, understanding the basic controls, and learning key safety procedures in a relaxed and age-appropriate way. We also make sure to match sailors with suitable boats based on their size and confidence levels.
Learning Through Doing on the Water
Our junior sailing courses follow the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme, starting with Stage 1. This first stage introduces children to steering, tacking, and basic boat handling. But most of all, it’s about building confidence on the water.
At OSTT, learning is hands-on. Young people will spend as much time on the water as possible, developing their skills through games, challenges, and fun tasks. While instruction is always present, we make sure that sailing feels like an enjoyable adventure, not a classroom lesson.
Youth Sailing Courses That Build Confidence and Friendship
For many young people, the first sailing course is also a chance to make new friends. Our sessions bring together children from across Oxfordshire and beyond, often resulting in friendships that last well beyond the course.
The combination of shared activity, teamwork, and a relaxed outdoor setting helps new sailors gain confidence not just in their skills, but also in themselves. Many parents tell us how their child becomes more independent and self-assured after completing just one weekend or holiday course.
What to Bring on the Day
First-time sailors don’t need to invest in specialist equipment. OSTT provides buoyancy aids and all essential safety gear. We recommend bringing:
- Comfortable clothes suitable for getting wet
- A towel and change of clothes
- Soft-soled shoes or old trainers
- Waterproofs (if available)
- A packed lunch and drinks
Our instructors will always give clear guidance in advance, so families feel well prepared for their child’s first session.
Weekend and Holiday Youth Sailing Courses
We offer Junior Weekend Courses throughout the year, designed to fit around school schedules. These half-day sessions allow young sailors to build skills gradually over a series of weekends.
For a more intensive experience, our holiday courses provide full-day sessions during school breaks. These are ideal for first-time sailors who want to immerse themselves in the experience and make fast progress.
Whichever format you choose, our junior sailing courses provide the same high standard of instruction and support.
Supportive, Qualified Instructors at OSTT
Every instructor at OSTT is RYA-qualified and trained to work with children of all ages and abilities. They understand that each young person learns differently and take the time to make sure everyone feels included.
Our instructors focus on encouragement, patience, and creating an environment where mistakes are part of learning. Many of our instructors began their own sailing journeys at OSTT, so they understand exactly what it’s like to be new to the sport.
Progressing Beyond Junior Sailing Courses
Completing a first sailing course is just the beginning. OSTT provides clear pathways for young people to continue their training, moving through the stages of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme at their own pace.
For those who develop a real passion for sailing, we also offer access to Instructor Courses and advanced training opportunities. Some of our past students have gone on to compete, coach, or pursue careers in the marine industry.
Why Junior Sailing Courses Are Worthwhile
Learning to sail is about more than just handling a boat. It teaches problem-solving, independence, responsibility, and resilience. For many young people, their first sailing experience at OSTT becomes a defining moment in their personal development.
Whether it’s steering a boat solo for the first time or working as part of a team to navigate the course, junior sailing creates powerful memories and lifelong skills. These experiences stay with young people as they move through school, work, and other life challenges.
Parental Support and Engagement
We know that supporting your child through something new can come with questions. OSTT welcomes communication from parents and carers before, during, and after each course. We’re happy to answer questions, explain progression routes, and recommend the right next step in the training journey.
Being involved also helps young people reflect on what they’ve achieved. Seeing their confidence grow and hearing them talk about their time on the water is often just as rewarding for families as it is for the sailors themselves.
Continuing Your Child’s Sailing Journey
Many young people who enjoy our junior sailing courses return each season to build on what they’ve learned. From weekend refreshers to advanced training stages, there’s always a next step to explore.
Joining follow-on sessions helps young sailors develop consistency, gain confidence in different wind conditions, and experience new roles such as helming or assisting others. It also introduces them to new boats and sailing challenges that keep things fresh and exciting.
