Sails, Circuits, and Service: George’s Path from Instructor to Engineer

Sailing Boats.

George discovered sailing through his school’s OST programme and rose to become a lead instructor. Now an engineer at BAE Systems and a Naval Reservist, he credits sailing for developing the skills that shaped his career. He continues to return each summer, inspiring the next generation on the water.

George T.’s journey with Oxford Sail Training began as a student at Fitzharrys School, where he first discovered sailing through their school programme at Farmoor Reservoir. Showing natural ability and enthusiasm, George soon progressed through his RYA stages and joined the Trust as an Assistant Instructor.

While continuing to support sessions and grow as a young instructor, George balanced his time on the water with his studies, eventually qualifying as an electronic engineer. He spent several seasons working as a lead instructor, building confidence, leadership, and technical skill, all of which translated into his professional path.

Today, George works at BAE Systems on the UK’s nuclear arsenal and serves in the Naval Reserves, a role that combines his engineering expertise with his passion for maritime operations. His background in sailing and instructing helped lay the foundation for both the discipline and teamwork demanded in his current roles.

Despite his demanding career, George still returns to Oxford Sail Training most summers to instruct and give back to the community that helped launch his journey. His story stands as a brilliant example of how outdoor education can spark long-term personal and professional development.
